Cookbook Review

By hannes @ 00:01 [ PHP Hypertext Preprocessor ]
O'Reilly last month kindly sent me a review copy of the new "Apache Cookbook", and indeed I managed to write a short piece for the PHP Usergroup Switzerland.
Don't know if it's noticeable, but I was actually quite overtired when I wrote it :)

High Fidelity

By hannes @ 23:28 [ Local ]
High Fidelity
High Fidelity
High Fidelity
I finally got my new HiFi-equipment.. The gateway drug to audiophility from reson/Audiopur!

Grand cru, indeed.

It's a combo of:
Creek CD50
Creek A50i
EPOS M12 + ST12

I don't have that audiophile (sound's a bit pervert, isn't it..) vocabulary, but the sound of this gem is really superb.

Currently playing: Franz Schubert: Der Tod und das Mädchen, String quartet in d, D 810..

Stunning.

No applause for SlideML

By hannes @ 01:49 [ Academia ]
Some days ago I delivered my first SlideML-made presentation for a course I attend.
As far as the content is concerned, the staff seemed to be consenting, but I had my answer to the question "Where ist the Powerpoint file?!" had to be disappointing
I had no point explaining the advantages of open formats, so I agreed to hand in a PDF transformation of my slides ASAP.. well, I hope to satisfy them with my least-effort result, (10 minutes, apparently)... got no feedback yet, though..
I'd thought employees of a CS department might be a bit more open for stuff like these.. bad guess.
Nevertheless, my decision keeps firm: All my presentations are going to be written in SlideML. Period!

DIE ZEIT embraces XML

By hannes @ 01:13 [ Extensible Markup Language ]
My favourite elitist weekly journal, DIE ZEIT has added two very interesting features to their website recently.
First, there's an RSS 0.91 Newsfeed. For a newspaper of their tradition and reputation, this looks quite progressive indeed!
But then, there's something even nicer: On each and every of their content pages, there's a link to its XML representation, which looks like http://xml.zeit.de/2004/01/S__Hussein.
Just replace "xml.zeit.de" by "www.zeit.de" to see it rendered in HTML.. Quite straightforward, indeed.. I have no idea yet what this service might be good for (apart from bewildering their xml-unaware readers, that is), but hey, isn't it just cool?
So if anybody knows a reasonable use case for that new xml service, I'd love to hear about it!
