Swisscom Unlimited 5-in-1 on Linux

Swisscom Unlimited 5-in-1 on Linux
I recently got myself a Swisscom Unlimited account, the one that comes with a Option GlobeTrotter FUSION+ HSDPA multimode WLAN/ HSDPA/ UMTS/ EDGE/ GPRS/ GSM card - students get rather good conditions, so I couldn't resist.

After a little tinkering it now does play very well with my thinkpad/ubuntu setup - with a GPL driver (called nozomi) made by the manufacturer (thanks!) and some more information by Matthias Nott.

Performance seems pretty much ok (~ 354 kbps down / 48 kbps up using UMTS), a test confirmed that's enough for decent VOIP quality. The advertised seamless handover feature seems to be a feature of the proprietary connection management software that ships with the device, so bad luck there - but who needs that feature anyway .. :)

So if you want to try too (no risk, you can return the card and cancel the account at no cost within a month), here's my /etc/ppp/options file:

/dev/noz0
460800
local
persist
lock
usepeerdns
ipcp-accept-local
ipcp-accept-remote
defaultroute
debug
nodeflate
nobsdcomp
nopcomp
noaccomp
novj
novjccomp
+chap
nomagic
lcp-echo-failure 0
lcp-echo-interval 0

The card is capable of 64,128 and 384 kpbs in the uplink as well so you may have found a network limit. Have you tried WiFi with ndiswrapper yet?

Paul

Hi Paul!

Nice to have you here. I sure did try ndiswrapper (with gtnwlan.inf, no problem), the card works pretty well as an ordinary wlan card - signal levels seem better than those of my Thinkpad's builtin adapter.

I did not yet, though, manage to authenticate with Swisscom's hotspots - they use EAP etc. with their MOBILE-EAPSIM access points, should theoretically work somehow with the wpa_supplicant...

But well, I've been invited to meet a product strategy manager at Swisscom Mobile's corporate headquarters tomorrow, to give them a little feedback - it's just 5 minutes from where I live, so no problem :)

But first I'd like to find the time to read http://icawww1.epfl.ch/mobnet/0506/Slides/2.2-MobileIP.pdf ..

Anyway, I'll keep you posted.

Any success with the MOBILE-EAPSIM yet? I have gprs/umts working, but with much lower speeds around 45kbps. I don't know what is going wrong. I will get a windows PC to see if the node is umts enabled.

No luck with eapsim, no - that would require *major* work, I guess. But I wrote myself a little script that displays incoming messages as gnome notifications on my desktop.. so I just have to enter my sim's number in Swisscom's browser form and get the access code seconds later.. works for me. Billing is the same regardless of the way you authenticate to the service.

Hi, I found a new software from vodafone.
"Vodafone Mobile Connect Card driver for Linux is a GPRS/UMTS/HSDPA device manager written in Python, licensed under the GPL. Features: Data call handling Send/Receive SMS SIM phone book management Graphical user interface using GTK"
https://forge.vodafonebetavine.net/projects/vodafonemobilec/
It work out of the box on my Unbuntu (configure username/password and gateway).
